There are a lot of different ways to interpret the North Node and the South Node. The meanings are flexible and multifaceted. You may find that the interpretation offered here is just one side of how things play out, or that you don’t even relate to it at all.
In Astrology, what works for me doesn’t always work for you, and vice versa. Practice the take what you need and leave the rest approach and you’ll find what works best for you and the rest won’t matter!
One thing to note before diving in is that the North Node and the South Node are on an axis. They are always going to be exactly opposite of each other.
The same can be said about sister signs or houses in the natal chart. Aries and Libra are on an axis and will always be exactly opposite each other, as will Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, and Pisces and Virgo and they’re respective house combinations (1 and 7, 2 and 8, 3 and 9, 4 and 10, 5 and 11, and 6 and 12) .
Whatever sign or house your North Node is in, or the transiting North Node is in, the South Node will always be in the exact opposite sign or house.
Each of these axes is about balance. They all have a general energy and the two signs or houses show the polar ways of expressing this energy, and with any opposite aspect in astrology, a relationship needs to be developed between both sides.
Both sides need the other side to get things done and how they work together can be super important.
One interpretation of South Node is that it is where your soul has already developed itself. In turn, the North Node is what you actually came here to grow and strengthen.
As a general observation, the soul seeks growth. It doesn’t want you to dive full force into something it’s already strengthened, developed, and learned while leaving the other side of things completely imbalanced and underdeveloped.
It has no problem with you using the gifts from before, but to focus on the same thing life after life after life would get pretty redundant and stagnating and when this happens, you will often find that your soul makes it really hard for you to advance forward.
Your soul wants you to grow and together you have set up lessons, obstacles, or guidance in your life so that when you do fall into old patterning, you can be directed back on track.
This means, the more you step into South Node energies, the more you will run into these lessons so that you can turn things around and focus on where you are meant to focus instead.
These lessons can be huge, but they don’t have to be. Just knowing where your South Node is and where your North Node is so you can dive in more fully will help turn things around. It doesn’t have to cause you any heartache, but sometimes that’s what you need to wake you up to something bigger.
You may have some fear as you aren’t sure what to expect, or maybe the energy is counterintuitive, but if you want things to move forward, your North Node is where you get to dive in.
If you want to make progress with your South Node in this process, don’t worry. Focusing on your North Node will help you do just that. It may not be in the ways you expect, but if you want career progress and a South Node in the Tenth House is just saying no, you may be surprised that working on your foundations and investing in your family through your Fourth House North Node opens up doors in ways you didn’t expect.
That doesn’t mean you should completely neglect where you have grown before though, as that would also do you a disservice. Rather, spend time checking in, tweaking, and updating as you need to, but only when you need to.
I like to compare it to the people who go to the gym and always skip leg day. Their arms get huge but their legs stay tiny!
The South Node is the arms and the North Node is your legs, and it’s about time to put your focus in on your legs!
If you never go back and work your arms though, they can get weak and you’ll lose a lot of your progress. Instead, you should make it a point to put most of your effort into your legs, but not all of it, at least until a better balance is reached.
It’s about balance and knowing that some sides already have a pretty decent head start and so when it comes to making progress there, a little effort goes a long way.
You don’t want to quit your job or give up your aspirations just because your Tenth House South Node tells you to, unless your intuition and soul are telling you to do it too, but rather when you put the bulk of your focus on the home, the job stuff just gets so much easier, and that can be so rewarding.
On the same note, if you do put work into your North Node, your soul can get pretty happy and just like your soul will give you warnings when you are going the wrong way, it can also give you a lot of positive reinforcement when you are going the right way.
As you dive more into your North Node you are often rewarded, not always on an earthly level of money, fame, power, but on a soul level, you end up finding the fulfillment you were looking for all along.
Listening to the guidance of your life, what’s working and what’s not is super helpful and quite frankly, a huge game changer when times are rough!
What does this have to do with transiting South Node though?
You have your Natal North and South Node. Where they are will determine in general, how this energy will play out in your life, but at any given moment, there is also a transiting North and South Node which will tell you how this energy is playing out just in this current moment.
The North and South Node are points calculated based on the relationship between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. They mark where the eclipses are going to happen throughout the year.
They move backward through the zodiac and spend about 18 months in each sign.
Transiting North and South Node will tell you where your soul wants you to focus now, but not necessarily where you should focus long term.
This means if you are finding yourself in a rut right now where you have had a lot of success in the past, transiting South Node could be involved.
Wherever they are during that 18 month time period you can either see things work really well as you develop something new through the North Node, or things can get stuck and stagnant if you try to push through with the South Node, which we often do!
Take a quick look right now, if you don’t already know, and see where the South Node is currently transiting for you.
What does this area represent? What sign is it in? What house? Are there any planets it’s hitting?
What do these energies normally mean for you?
Have you been experiencing any blocks in these areas of life lately?
Have you been trying to push through and make progress here?
Now, opposite of that, where is transiting North Node?
What sign is it in? What house is it moving through? Is it hitting any planets?
What does this area of your life mean for you?
Have you tried investing in this area of your life yet?
If not, why not?
If so, what has your results been like?
If you are feeling like you are in that rut, dive more into the energy the North Node is transiting over.
This may feel weird or off, but just try it! If you aren’t making any progress elsewhere, could it really hurt?
If after a while, it’s not working either, stop and reevaluate or go back to what you were doing before, but if it does work, celebrate and keep going!
If despite focusing on the North Node side for a while, you are still wanting and waiting to make progress where transiting South Node is, you can check an ephemeris to see when it crosses over into a new house or a new sign and when the effect will move on.
To do this, first, remember that it moves backward! Second, it’s opposite the North Node. Not every ephemeris shows the South Node, so if you can figure out when the North Node changes signs or houses, you just found out when the South Node changes sign or house too!
Just find the degree for the next house over. If it’s currently in the ninth house, look to see what degree the ninth house starts in and where the eighth house ends and then check the ephemeris to find the date where the North Node hits that degree.
Once you hit that point, it’s smooth sailing ahead.
Until then though, keep focusing on that North Node energy!
Then, leave me a comment telling me about your experiences with transiting North or South Node, or even Natal North and South Node! I’d love to hear about it!
