Tarot Card of the Day: Hansel & Gretel

Tarot Card of the Day: Hansel & Gretel
Traditionally this card is the lovers, symbolic of balance, harmony, relationships, choices, and love.

If you ever heard the story of Hansel and Gretel you would know that it involves two kids who live with their father and step mother. One day, during a tough famine, their step mother convinces their father to abandon them in the woods, which he does reluctantly. Once abandoned, they find a white bird who leads them to a cottage made entirely out of sweets.

Once there, the hungry pair indulge. After they fill their bellies, an old blind witch appears and imprisons them. The witch tries to fatten Hansel up, but he tricks her with a chicken bone to think he’s still too thin. The witch gets impatient and decides to go ahead and cook the pair. She asks Gretel to check the oven for her, but Gretel plays dumb, pretending she doesn’t know what the witch is talking about. The witch goes to show her and Gretel shoves her into the oven before shutting and bolting it closed, effectively killing the witch.

Gretel frees her brother and the pair discover some of the witch’s treasures and jewels. They fill their pockets to the brim before returning home to find their step mother dead and their father mourning the death of his children. When the father sees that his kids are still alive, they all reunite and live happily ever after.

In this particular card, Hansel and Gretel are holding hands, walking their path to the cottage, not yet encountering the witch and her twisted ways or the treasure they find in the end, but already having been abandoned by their father and wicked step mother. In the tree above, there are two squirrels playing and a bird sitting on a branch, with a heart held by a blue string.

Life’s struggles are much better tackled when you have a partner you can trust. Times may be scary or things may seem uncertain, but at the end you may discover your own treasures and jewels because you had someone to work with. Utilize the balance in your life. Utilize the relationships in your life in a healthy way. You may find that for now, helping each other gets you a lot farther than just worrying about yourself.
